Rock on!

squirrel-rock2Rock art was an idea that was brewing in my head ever since I traveled through New Zealand in 2015. We came across a beach in the South island that was covered by thousands of the most beautiful smooth white rocks. I gathered a handful and around the world they traveled with me.

Some I doodled on and gave to friends as souvenirs, which were quite the hit. But a remaining few settled with me in Brooklyn, New York. They sit on my shelf and remind me to stop, appreciate the beauty in simple things and to be present.

I’ve lived in Brooklyn for almost a year. The fast forward New Yorker lifestyle really does not suit me. However, the people DO suit me…and I love the diversity, and the art that is everywhere. But if everyone could just please just stay still, for a second? It’s always RUSH RUSH RUSH! The city operates on a fast forward button, but could we get a PAUSE?

I was already trying to do this at restaurants/cafés by leaving with the tip an extra dollar folded into an origami heart. I loved leaving it in the check and walking out the door. Sometimes I look back and see the server so happy. Perhaps to have a break in their day, even just for 30 seconds, or that someone put a bit of special thought into something just for them. My favorite is to walk out the door and not look back or take credit. It’s true giving.

Somehow all my ideas of art, rocks, giving love and staying in the moment all combined into one – I could leave little reminders for strangers to stop and appreciate the world around them.

Mentioning it to a fellow artist friend, they liked the idea too. And so began a call for artists and the next (no name) Art Group project. This one was just super duper fun!
